Tips for Winning a Paintball Tournament with Three Players

Tournament success can be compared to a game of chess. The emphasis is squarely on tactics. Without a game plan or strategy, your team has a meager chance of advancing past the first round, even in novice events. Successful players employ various techniques; your best bet is to experiment with several approaches and settle on one consistently delivers results. The other team’s strategy is an unknown variable, so be prepared to pivot swiftly if your initial process isn’t successful.

Although your arsenal is small for a 3-man tournament, you should try to disperse as many firearms as possible as soon as the whistle blows. You should aim for the sidelines. This means you should prioritize getting one of your players to a side or corner bunker as soon as possible. You can also use the initial snake bunker (snake 1) or the snake insert bunker, which are effective places to defend. The goal is to force the other team to approach your side while being caught in the crossfire of your troops. A delay break is what you need. For instance, you may employ this tactic by assigning one player to the snake side of the field, another to the side with the Dorito bunkers, and a third to the side with the snake insert bunkers or the corner. The participants would then walk in tandem with their opponents, firing paintballs at them from the same (but opposing) bunkers.

The delay pause is helpful since it allows your team to sneak about undetected. When an opponent slides behind your bunker, you make the corresponding move into the opposite bunker. The opponent will be too preoccupied with sliding into their bunker to see the player making their way there. Because of this, when the enemy emerges from his bunker to fire at the player, he will be aiming at the wrong bunker. If the opponent is too exposed in his current position, the player has a better chance of scoring a successful shot. If the player’s shot is blocked, they must quickly become aggressive and strategic. To be effective, bold action must be timed with openings. After the enemy retreats behind his bunker in response to the player’s fire, the player can safely advance to the next bunker. It will have the same result as taking a break afterward. When the opponent comes out to shoot, they’ll be aiming at the wrong bunker, giving you a more precise shot at them.

If the player cannot score on the opponent, they must inform the rest of the team of their opponent’s whereabouts. The team should also share information about the locations of the other two opponents. The squad should “cross the field” once everyone on the opposing side has shared their position. This means that the left-hand side of the field will fire upon the right-hand side and vice versa. Right-sided players should not stop monitoring the action on their side of the area. Don’t lose focus, and only keep your eye on your intended target. Distractions like this are all too common and might spell doom for the strategy in question. When you “cross the field” with fire, your enemies often lean too far from behind their bunkers, giving you an easy kill. If a player on the left side of the field fires at a player on the right, the right-side player will have an easier time getting through the bunker because the right-side player will be leaning further to the right.

A signal to the rest of the squad that an enemy has been eliminated serves as a cue to pursue the remaining enemies further down the field. When one player is taken out of a game of three vs. three, the remaining two players face tough odds. A well-prepared three-man squad will rush the opposite team and try to corner them as soon as possible. It’s ideal to have the two remaining individuals near one another. Therefore, any attempt to herd them together will be fruitful. Create similar scenarios and assign roles to each player when training. If a player gets eliminated, the other players should be aware of their roles and prepared to take them over. With such small squads, this is crucial and needs to be addressed immediately whenever somebody is hurt.

Delay Break Player, Home Player, and Runner are the three distinct positions for a three-man squad. The Runner’s mission is to reach a designated bunker as fast as possible. Thus, he won’t blow the first whistle but will instead start running. Until the runner reaches their designated place, the Delay Break Player will stand on the opposite side of the field and offer covering fire. The Delay Break Player should relocate to the opposite bunker as soon as the runner reaches the destination. Before the runner gets his bunker, the Home Player will give cover fire from the same side of the field. When this occurs, the Home Player is responsible for keeping the other players apprised of the positions of both teams at all times. However, the finest teams ensure that all players, regardless of status, are responsible for sharing new information as soon as it becomes available.

These are just a few methods utilized in 3-man events as a starting point; there are many more possible combinations of movement and virtually infinite scenarios to practice. The ideal tactic is to be flexible and ready to change strategies at any time by rehearsing various plays. Learning to gauge your opponents’ tendencies is a skill that develops through time, but it’s crucial for adjusting your approach. Determine what you’re doing and keep doing it. Once you’ve identified several effective methods, stick with them until they no longer yield the desired results. There’s no need to “fix” what isn’t broken or introduce untested innovations at the eleventh hour. Competing teams with more experience will quickly catch on to the fact that you’re winging it. Keep doing what you’ve been practicing, and keep track of your successes and failures. It’s better to make adjustments during practice than in the middle of a game.
