How to Make Your Computer Faster
A Brief Recap of My Background
It’s been around 18 years since I first got a computer. My uncle gave it to me because he felt I could enjoy using an Apple computer. The laptop only had two floppy drives that measured 5.5 inches in diameter rather than a hard disk. Black and green were the only two colors allowed. I only used it for gaming and nothing else.
After that, my dad got an 80286 computer with the DOS operating system menu. Since we had a DOS system and I was interested in games, I started stealing games from my pals. Due to the availability 80486, this machine was not thought to be very quick. Unfortunately, this means that not all matches are compatible with or playable on an 80286 computer.
That’s when I learned that upgrading the computer’s memory is crucial. Since I couldn’t acquire more memory, I looked into DOS programs instead. Memory Maker was supposed to help people remember more by making it feel like they had a virtual memory. However, it didn’t work very well, if at all.
Sometime later, my dad got a Pentium 133 computer running Windows 95. I did the upgrade to Windows 98. Later, I majored in computer science in college and acquired yet another Celeron 300A system. I attempted an overclock, but after 333MHz, the computer stopped responding. The 33 MHz boost did not significantly increase the speed.
THE DEVICES
MSCONFIG
This is a standard Windows component that almost everyone has access to. Entering’msconfig’ from the Start menu’s Run menu will bring up a window where you may change various settings about your computer. The startup tab displays the computer’s current startup programs. As a result, having fewer programs load at boot time with Windows is an excellent approach to speed up the process.
MSN, Skype, and similar utilities will significantly slow your startup time. Antivirus software, of course, needs to launch at the same time as your computer. You may argue that you’ll always want to have MSN and Skype open, but it’s best to activate them on startup without allowing them to sign in automatically.
The speed with which my computer boots up is essential to me because there are times when I want to use the keyboard and monitor. Therefore, I am content with desktop shortcuts, free to run whatever I like after Windows loads.
The starting tab is typically empty after a clean installation. Therefore, you can safely deselect all of the options provided. If you still have problems with your system after that, you can launch the configuration utility and select all the programs you want to throw at boot time.
Safe Windows
This is a free spyware removal tool developed by Microsoft. Additionally, it serves as a manager for new ventures. You may find the Software Explorer link in the menu labeled “Tools.” It’s like having a startup and task managers in one convenient place. Current processes, network connections, Winsock service providers, and startup applications can all be viewed. The highlighted applications represent options that can be removed, disabled, or enabled.
But Windows Defender is only compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista.
CCleaner
Your installation of Windows may begin to run more slowly after some time has passed. This is due to the large number of programs and games that you have installed but have not fully uninstalled. In addition to placing the necessary files in their designated locations, many entries are also added to the Windows registry during a program or game installation. Regrettably, incomplete deletion of registry entries is a common occurrence during uninstallation.
The Windows registry is a file system directory that stores configuration information for Microsoft Windows 32-bit, 64-bit, and Windows Mobile operating systems. It holds data and configurations for the PC’s hardware, OS software, and most non-OS software, as well as information about the PC’s users and their preferences. The registry is where most system settings, including those in the Control Panel, and system rules and the grounds for most installed programs are saved and reflected. – The Free Encyclopedia
Free software called CCleaner can be used to check the registry for invalid entries and remove them if necessary. Many individuals warn against tampering with registry settings because of potential security risks. It is indeed risky. But I’ve been using this free software for a while and haven’t had any significant issues. My system is noticeably quicker now, especially when I first turn it on.
Right now, I’m running Windows Vista, and I don’t think the software is optimized for it because some of the buttons are grayed out.
Compared to CCleaner, IOLO Technologies’ System Mechanic is the superior software. Because, you know, it costs money. You’ll be astounded by the performance and features of System Mechanic if you can get your hands on a copy.
Upgrade the System’s Specs
You don’t have to modify any of these settings if you’re happy with the polished look that Windows is currently displaying. However, there are a couple of scenes that you can change to improve privacy without changing Windows’ aesthetic. Right-clicking My Computer and selecting Properties will take you to the Advanced System Settings panel. If you’re using Windows XP, head to Tools > Options > Advanced, while Windows Vista users should head to the System > Advanced > Properties menu item.
Three separate panes are labeled Performance, User Profiles, and Startup and Recovery within the more advanced tab. The Visual Effects frame can be accessed by selecting the Settings button within the Performance frame. If you want Windows to run as quickly as possible, disabling all the extra features below is best. Suppose you would like a more elaborate appearance. In that case, however, you may preserve the drop shadow option for icon labels and the visual styles for windows and buttons by deselecting everything but the bottom two options.
Data Saved to Your Desktop and Your Account
The starting time of your computer is affected by the size of your user account. You can see the total storage space allocated to your account from the User Profiles pane. To view a list of users and their respective sizes, click the Settings button within the User Profiles box.
I try to keep as few files as possible in my user account folders. I have dealt with issues resulting from corrupted user profiles, and the only way to recover the files was to connect the hard drive to another working machine and use its operating system to access the music, pictures, bookmark favorites, documents, and game saves. Some people might find that extremely inconvenient, though. Furthermore, some viruses exploit user profiles to spread.
User profiles are the location of desktop files. The longer it takes for the computer to boot up, the more icons and files are on the desktop.
Keeping them on a separate disc or partition will keep them safe and add speed to your system.
Clean Up Disk
You can remove temporary Internet files, downloaded program files, setup files, and compressed files with the help of Disk Cleanup. It’s another step in cleaning up your system and might not even assist with performance. At least now you know where to look for the safe-to-delete files. Freeing up enough space on your hard drive is also crucial to the health of your computer.
